The Harvest

It is busy in the garden once the food starts, and at the end when the nights get colder, its a race to get it all picked. This was my last big day in the garden.
Probably got about nine or ten zucchini, they ripened in a good flow to eat regularly, but I never had an over abundance.  Two plants would feed another family.
Oh the watermelon.  The vines and leaves did not like the cold at all, looking pretty sad by the time I did the final harvest. The tomatoes are pretty cranky in the cold as well, but they were really healthy and even when I picked the last of them there was new growth going on...crazy, I tell ya.
One package of carrot seeds...whoa.  This is about a third of the total amount I picked at the end and we had been eating them regularly for a month. I gave away carrots, plus I made carrot bread, carrot soup, stews, vegetable rice dishes.  It was fun and delicious.
I had two baskets full of tomatoes on the last day. These romas are the last ones I found as I gave everything a once over.  Made salsa and marinara, also did some fried green tomatoes with the beefsteak toms. They were ok, I had some trouble getting the batter to stick, but the flavor was good. I tried two different recipes, but, I would need some practice if I were to ever serve them to anyone else.
The last batch of watermelon, I think I juiced most of this.  I gave several away during the course of the season and we ate mass quantities of watermelon this summer.
Can't wait for spring....
